Nawaz Sharif’s Short-Lived Return to Pakistan

Former Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif’s highly anticipated return to Islamabad turned out to be short-lived. Sharif was arrested and deported to Saudi Arabia less than four hours after landing. Sharif was removed from power in a coup by General Pervez Musharraf in 1999. The Times of India says Sharif’s wife, Kulsoom Nawaz, wants to return and challenge Musharraf in her husband’s place.

Experts say that recent events in Pakistan are not promising.

Update: Slate has compiled the reaction of Pakistani bloggers here.   Also, Steve Coll of the The New Yorker provided a good overview of the situation on the NewsHour last night.
